YaY is a nom de artiste, for Eddie. Because the words “yAy” is a palindrome, it can be a pleasing visual effect. This Website presents a sampling of the many facets of his art through various albums. Look in each piece for the letters “YaY” interwoven within each piece.
Born Eduard Gross in the heart of Prague culture, the artist now lives in Washington, D.C. He has lived and studied in the major artistic world centers. The Outdoor album on the Website reflects extensive travels to eco and heritage sites such as the Amazonian, Galapagos Islands, Alaska, Middle East, Europe and the Caribbean. His Mayan archeological interests are represented.
The artistic style has changed since he was a “hippie artist” in the ’70s with some of the same spirit carried forward. He taught cloth dyeing classes at OSU but now concentrates on combining current technologies with classic drawing. Each piece undergoes an extended process of drawings, scans, enlargements and painting. Many are made specifically to be excellent on the internet – some screensavers.
Much of his artwork is created in public. With a few extreme beers, the club clatter and a waft of perfume, yAy draws scenes which meld object, background and audience. Experience night life with its noisy chatter, exotic women/men, dancing and music. Have fun, party and listen to yAy’s paper musicians until closing time. Wander late night streets with its unique characters.
Other works are interpretations of famous artworks drawn at the great museums of the world; or, are compendiums of lectures on many subjects.
